Gamblers have found innovative ways to stay entertained during the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the shutdown of brick-and-mortar casinos, they began to meet their gambling needs at online casinos. When most traditional sporting leagues halted their seasons, they began betting on the few sports that were still in action.
For some, this meant betting on the Ukrainian ping-pong tournaments, such as the WIN Cup, Setka Cup, and TT Cup. However, bettors who enjoy placing a wager on this fine sport will now no longer be able to if they live in the state of New Jersey.
Following some allegations of match-fixing made in an ESPN report, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement has taken the decision to suspend all bets on Ukrainian ping-pong tournaments.
The board stated that it is unaware if match-fixing may have been associated with any sportsbooks operating in the state. However, it has decided to take this step as a precautionary measure.
Ping-Pong Betting Big Business Amid COVID-19 Pandemic
Although a ping-pong betting ban would regularly be small news in the online gambling world, the sport (along with esports) has grown to become one of the most bet on events during the coronavirus pandemic.
With most popular global sporting leagues having gone into an indefinite hiatus, sports that allowed for players to practice social distancing in play grew to become incredibly popular around the world. So, popular in fact, that popular US sportsbook DraftKings stated that there was a time during the year that 60% of their revenue was coming from ping-pong.
With more than 90 matches taking place in leagues around the world, it is clear as to why ping-pong is a popular betting sport. Although there have been some questions about the legitimacy of matches in some European leagues, this has done nothing to deter gamblers from betting.
There are many stories of gamblers winning big on ping-pong betting across the country. If the legitimacy of the sport is making you think twice about betting on matches, know that you can play casino games on the internet where results aren’t fixed.
