Gambling in Virginia is very limited to say the least.  The only gambling available for a long time was the state lottery. And while the state lottery is accessible online, it’s only as a subscription service. You cannot purchase or play any lottery games only you may check winning numbers and that’s most of it.

However, in the last two years the winds of change have been blowing through the Old Dominion. The Colonial Downs Racetrack was revived and now offers more gambling and off-track betting options to residents in the Mother of States.

Lawmakers have been open to discussion and gaming expansion, probably because other states have been opening up to more gambling forms. Therefore, we expect more to happen in the gambling arena. One native American tribe in the state has been working tirelessly for some years to bring casinos to Virginia and this is year has show great progress.

How Many Casinos Are in Virginia?

The closest thing the Old Dominion has to a casino is the Colonial Downs racetrack. The state’s lawmakers in 2018, Virginia lawmakers endorsed a law that allowed the revival of the racetrack which had since shut down in 2014. With the new legislation the racetrack would be able to have instance race terminal and slot machine like gaming at the racetrack. Visitors would be able to bet on live and simulcast horseracing at these Instant racing terminals. Since 2019, Colonial Downs has been in full operational swing with OTB and instant racing terminals where players can enjoy slot game play.

Virginia currently has no casinos, however that is changing soon. The Pamunkey Tribe has been working to get rights to build a casino and run a gambling business like a lot of federally recognized tribes in the USA. As they waited for approval, they acquired land in the past few years in the hopes of building not just one but several casinos. In January 2020 the tribe announced plans to build $3350 million casino near Manchester. They have also secured land in Kent and Norfolk. In November 2020 Norfolk residents will vote and weigh in on whether they support a casino in their community or not.

Virginia State Lottery

Another gambling outlet for residents of the Old Dominion is the state lottery. The lottery offers a wide range of draw games at low prices and high rewards. The VA lottery also participates in multijurisdictional lottery jackpot games such as the Powerball and Mega Millions. There are also scratch card games that range from a $1 to $30. You can also try your hand at various keno games which have, multiple draws throughout. In addition to these there are raffles, Cash4Life and Bank a Million games. Not to mention popular draw games like Pick 3, Pick 4 and Cash 5.
